Construction of the Santa Generosa church began on Easter Sunday in 1915. The community helped. Father Marcello Franco opened the partially built church in 1924. For almost 20 years work was slow. Then C\u00f4nego Pedro Gomes learned the city would take the land. This was for city improvements.
In 1945, work stopped. But, Alberto Baccilique became the new p\u00e1roco. He learned the church would not be taken. Work began again. The church was finally opened in 1950.
For 17 years, the church served its community. Then, in 1967, C\u00f4nego Jos\u00e9 Mayer Paine was in charge when demolition began. This was to make way for the 23 de Mar\u00e7o avenue and the metro. The church community had to find a new place for the Santa Generosa parish.
On September 27, 1970, a new church opened. It was built on the site of the old parish hall and house. The archbishop, Cardinal Agnelo Rossi, dedicated it. Forty Italian stained-glass windows, chandeliers, and the main door from the original church were reused. Some houses on Tom\u00e1s Carvalhal and Afonso de Freitas streets were bought. These became the social center and parish house.
But who was Santa Generosa? According to religious authorities, Generosa was likely a young slave. She lived in Carthage, Africa. She was killed for her Christian faith during Roman persecutions. Even facing death, she did not deny her beliefs.
