Across the Delaware Memorial Bridge, a beacon of remembrance stands tall. Veterans Memorial Park has silently watched history unfold since its dedication in 1956. This park isn’t just a green space. It’s a living testament to the courage and sacrifice of those who served our nation. Veterans Memorial Park first honored the fallen from Delaware and New Jersey in World War II and the Korean War. The original memorial walls, dedicated in October 1956, bear witness to the solemn ceremonies held here. Imagine veterans from every branch, standing in formation as the American flag rose for the first time. Dignitaries and politicians crossed the highway, a bridge between states and a symbol of unity, to honor nearly 15,000 local heroes. Over the years, Veterans Memorial Park has grown, adding layer upon layer of stories. In 1977, a marker was placed in remembrance of those lost in the Vietnam War. This marker is a stark reminder of the 1,487 New Jersey and 81 Delaware lives lost during that conflict. A decade later, another stone marker joined the park’s collection, commemorating the Gulf War. It honors the few but significant losses from New Jersey and Delaware during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The park also houses unique tributes, like the One Army Statue, a powerful symbol of unified Army forces throughout history. Placed near the Vietnam marker, it honors the veterans of that era, its soldier bearing an M-16 and dressed in a Vietnam-era uniform. The Submariners Monument, added in 2002, is a poignant tribute to the silent service and the 52 submarines still on eternal patrol. A year later, the Korean War Monument, uniquely placed between American and South Korean flags, symbolizes a partnership forged in conflict. The American Eagle Statue, built by the DRBA’s Veterans Committee, features the word “peace” on its plaque. Veterans Memorial Park continues to evolve, with the recent addition of the Gold Star Families Monument in 2018. Its unique void design represents the immeasurable loss felt by families, and a second marker stands behind it, amplifying the tribute.
