Imagine walking through the rolling hills of Central Bohemia, the air crisp and alive with the scent of wildflowers. Suddenly, a glimpse of something unusual breaks through the landscape. There it is, nestled among the fields, the Vestecký rybník. It’s a pond, but not just any pond.

A small concrete plaque marks its history. It wasn’t always called Vestecký rybník. In times past, it was known as “the manor pond” and belonged to the Dolní Břežany estate, a vast property controlled by the Prague archbishopric. The estate saw the pond’s potential, recognizing that fish farming could be a profitable venture. Nearly every village had a pond, primarily used for raising geese and ducks, and, of course, fish. The manor pond, however, held a special spot in the village’s eyes. It flourished with a beautiful population of carp.

But even though the estate managed the Vestecký rybník, it didn’t completely embrace the pond as their own. The locals, perhaps feeling a connection to the water, would often help themselves to the catch, much to the dismay of the estate owners. This led to a tense standoff, with the archbishop ultimately deciding to drain the pond in the 1880s. The land, once a haven for fish, was then sown with crops. However, the villagers saw this move as a grave injustice. They relied upon the pond, not only for fish but also as a source of water for their animals.

The locals, spurred by a sense of injustice, raised their voices. The mayor, a determined man named Mr. Skřivan, stepped up. He journeyed to Prague, pleading their case before the Vice-Governorship of the Kingdom of Bohemia. His persistence paid off. The archbishop, recognizing the town’s need for the pond, sold it to them for a hefty sum, 2,000 gold pieces. This was a significant amount of money, a small brewery could be purchased for twenty thousand gold pieces.

Today, the Vestecký rybník is a calm and peaceful place. While it may not be as productive as it once was, it still provides a sanctuary for wildlife and a place for locals to enjoy. You can still find anglers, casting their lines in hopes of a good catch, and the pond remains a symbol of the resilience and determination of the village.
