What if walls could talk? The walls of the Versöhnungskirche – Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche Stuttgart-Feuerbach could tell a tale of community, resilience, and change. This church, nestled in the heart of Stuttgart-Feuerbach on Burgenlandstraße, has witnessed over a century of history. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Evangelisch-methodistische Kirche (EmK) community.
The Versöhnungskirche, formerly known as the Friedenskirche, wasn’t always here. Before this structure graced Burgenlandstraße, the congregation met in various locations, starting with a simple gathering in 1851 led by preacher Johannes C. Link. As the community grew, they moved from living rooms to the Zionskapelle. Finally, in 1915, the Friedenskirche, now known as the Versöhnungskirche, opened its doors. Designed by architect H. Weißhaar, this new building symbolized a fresh start and provided a much-needed larger space. The congregation thrived, even earning the nickname “Schmalzkirche” after World War I. This was due to the generosity of American Methodists who sent food packages to the community, attracting new members.
The Versöhnungskirche also played a vital role in the community beyond Sunday services. In 1927, a kindergarten opened on the premises. This provided childcare for working mothers and continues to serve the community today. That same year, the church acquired land in Lindental. This space offered recreational opportunities and further strengthened community bonds. The church faced challenges during the Nazi era. Despite political pressure leading to declining membership, the community persevered, celebrating its 70th anniversary and dedicating a new organ in 1933. World War II brought further trials. The church suffered damage from air raids in 1944, but was restored in 1949.
More recently, in 2014, three EmK congregations in Stuttgart merged. This created the Stuttgart-Nord community, solidifying the Versöhnungskirche’s role as a central hub. The church continues to serve as a beacon of faith. It also fosters community engagement through events like the “Klangart Konzertreihe” and participation in Feuerbach’s cultural night.
