You can witness glassblowing demonstrations in several factories. These demonstrations show how molten glass is transformed into stunning pieces. Some of the shops sell incredibly beautiful and costly chandeliers.
A free street performance added unexpected charm to our visit. A man played a small accordion on a bridge near the Basilica of Saint Mary and Saint Donatus. Then an older Italian gentleman burst into song. ‘O sole mio’ echoed around the small square. This spontaneous serenade was a highlight for many. People clapped and cheered. The singer and accordionist exchanged a quick fist bump.
Burano the next island dazzles with its colourful houses. This cheerful landscape is famous for its lacemaking tradition. Fishermen originally painted their houses in bright colours. This helped them locate their homes in thick fog. They also needed permission from local authorities who would decide the colour based on location. Casa di Bepi is a beautifully painted building. It once belonged to Giuseppe Toselli known as Bepi Suà. Bepi sold candies and created an open-air cinema in his courtyard. He constantly repainted his house. After his death his sister cared for it. Today the building is a bed and breakfast. The leaning bell tower belonging to the Church of Saint Martin Bishop adds another unique touch. The tower is 53 meters tall and leans 1.83 meters due to subsidence.
