Opened in September 1981, Venerable John Merlini Catholic School has a unique history. It initially shared a facility with Whitfield Public School. The Venerable John Merlini Catholic School community was formed from families of St. Gaspar and St. Roch Catholic School communities. These families lived south of Steeles Avenue and west of Islington Avenue. Later, in 2002, St. Gaspar Catholic School merged with Venerable John Merlini Catholic School. This merger created the single school we see today. The school is part of St. Roch’s Parish. The Society of the Precious Blood plays a vital role in the religious education program at Venerable John Merlini. They teach Gospel Values and provide opportunities for students, staff, and parents to participate in liturgies. Venerable John Merlini Catholic School is named after a remarkable figure. John Merlini was born in Spoleto, Italy in 1795. He dedicated his life to conducting popular missions throughout Italy. His preaching focused on the reconciling power of Christ’s blood. He also led the development of the Missionary Society of the Precious Blood, both in Italy and internationally. Recognized for his sanctity, he died in Rome in 1873. Years later, in 1972, Pope Paul VI declared John Merlini venerable.
