Velvarská brána

Clutching the cobblestones beneath the Velvarská brána, imagine the clatter of hooves and creak of cartwheels. This gate, the sole survivor of Slaný’s medieval fortifications, has witnessed centuries of comings and goings. Velvarská brána, meaning Velvary Gate, hints at its purpose. It once guarded the road leading to the town of Velvary. Though its exact construction date remains a mystery, whispers from 1443 place it firmly in the landscape. A weathered inscription, tucked beneath a second-story window, tells a tale of two town councilors, Aleš (Krejčí) and Václav Novinka, overseeing its construction during a time of fortification and growth. Under Jiří z Poděbrad’s reign, Velvarská brána underwent renovations, earning the moniker “New Gate.” The year 1461, etched on its southern wall, marks this transformation. Originally, the Velvarská brána stood proudly amidst a defensive network. Imagine a fortified gatehouse, complete with battlements, a sturdy bastion, and a bridge spanning a protective moat. However, time and progress have a way of reshaping landscapes. The 16th century brought devastating fires, scarring the gate and surrounding structures. In 1795, the nearby town hall succumbed to flames. A bell, cast in 1514 and known as the “alarm bell,” found a new home within the Velvarská brána, its somber tones marking both town alerts and the final journey of condemned prisoners. As Slaný evolved, the gate’s defensive role diminished. In the 1820s, road construction claimed the outer gatehouse. The Velvarská brána itself narrowly escaped demolition, saved by a wave of restoration in 1868. Atop its roof perches a copper weathercock, a symbol of vigilance, echoing a similar sentinel from 1612. Today, the Velvarská brána stands 38 meters tall, its footprint a solid 9 by 8 meters. Above the archway on the north side, the town’s coat of arms and the emblems of six town guilds are proudly displayed. Look closely, and you’ll find ancient mason’s marks etched into the stones. Within its walls, a museum now tells the story of Slaný’s history and its fortifications. The Velvarská brána is more than just a gate. It’s a time capsule, a silent storyteller whispering tales of resilience, change, and the enduring spirit of Slaný.
