From the heights of Vedetta Alice gaze upon Trieste. This unassuming stone structure holds a captivating history. Vedetta Alice isn’t just a viewpoint. It’s a silent witness to centuries of change.

Originally built in 1897 Vedetta Alice wasn’t always here. It began life as a fountain’s tower in Piazza Dogana. This tower was moved to this location. Its name Alice honors the wife of a Societá Alpina delle Giulie vice-president. This society of mountaineers and nature lovers played a key role in many viewpoints’ construction across the Karst.

The original Vedetta Alice didn’t survive. The Austrian army demolished it in 1915. They feared it would aid enemy artillery. It was deemed a dangerous landmark for military reasons. The current Vedetta Alice a replacement built in 1957 stands proudly in its place. The Ente per il Turismo di Trieste the Trieste Tourism Board commissioned this construction. The new structure echoes the design of other viewpoints built around the same time.

Imagine standing here in 1973. You might have seen Virgil Suciu Ladislau Kovacs or Mereg Csalad. These individuals left their marks near Vedetta Alice. Their names etched in history. They represent the many who sought freedom. They sought the allure of the West. This viewpoint was a symbol of a better life.

Today Vedetta Alice offers panoramic views of Trieste. You can spot Longera and San Giovanni from here. The Bosco del Farneto stretches as far as the eye can see. The vista encompasses the vastness of the Karst. The sea shimmers invitingly in the distance.

The Karst’s beauty and history converge at Vedetta Alice. A simple stone structure. A monument to those who dreamed of freedom. A testament to the endurance of Trieste’s spirit. Remember Vedetta Alice. Remember its story.
