Imagine David Vávra as a boy. He explored these very rocks. Now, he’s given us the Vávrova vyhlídka.

The Vávrova vyhlídka lookout is more than just a platform. It’s a tribute to a lifelong connection. David Vávra, the renowned actor, writer, and architect, designed this two-meter-high wooden structure. He wanted to honor the beautiful location where he was born and raised.

From here at Vávrova vyhlídka, the views are remarkable. You will hardly find a wider panorama of Prague. The Vltava valley stretches before you. Prague unfolds in all directions. To the left, you’ll see the Barrandov hills. Your gaze then sweeps over Smíchov. Spot Dívčí hrady, Petřín, and Prague Castle. Bohnice, Vyšehrad, and Kavčí hory appear to the right.

This area, the Branické rocks, is a conservation zone. It is fenced off for security. These rocks are rich in fossils. Cephalopods and trilobites lie beneath our feet. The area has been a natural monument since 1968.

Rare thermophilic animals and protected plants thrive here. Lizards bask in the sun. A unique species of snail makes its home here. Kestrels nest in the rocks. Bats spend the winter in the drifts below.

Limestone was extracted here until 1928. Later, during World War II, the Nazis had plans. They began building a huge underground factory. This factory would be sheltered from potential bombing. Many legends surround this unfinished project. The factory was never put into operation. Only an ingenious drift system remains. Seven tunnels exist with steel doors. The entrances are now buried by stones.

The Sklep theatre is nearby. David Vávra co-founded it when he was just fourteen. Today, the iconic theatre attracts much attention. It is located in the Dobeška theatre.

To reach Vávrova vyhlídka, there are a few options. If you’re coming from the Vltava River, walk from the Přístaviště tram stop. Head towards the lower part of the rocks. Pass the wooden evangelical church from 1948. Walk through a forest to long stairs. These stairs lead to the Vávrova vyhlídka lookout. If you prefer to skip the climb, take bus 128 to the Dobeška stop. Walk about 70 meters behind the stop. Find the path in the pine forest. It will guide you to the lookout.

Take a moment to appreciate this spot. Vávrova vyhlídka offers a unique perspective. It blends natural beauty with cultural significance. It offers a lasting tribute to this enchanting place.
