Vauban Dam

From a defensive necessity to a panoramic vista, the Vauban Dam in Strasbourg has played many roles. In 17th-century Strasbourg, a new defense was rising against potential invaders. The Vauban Dam, initially known as the “Great Lock,” was a brainchild of the renowned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Built between 1685 and 1700, the Vauban Dam replaced the aging Ponts Couverts defense system. It fortified the southern approach to Strasbourg. The dam’s purpose was ingenious. In times of siege, its arches could be closed. This would raise the River Ill’s water level, flooding the surrounding lands. This tactic was successfully employed during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. The rising waters turned fields into marshland, forcing Prussian troops to retreat. Today, the Vauban Dam in Strasbourg stands as a testament to the city’s past. Its 13 arches stretch across 120 meters. Three arches were later elevated to handle floodwaters and boat traffic. The Vauban Dam served not only as a defense but also as a way to manage the Ill River’s flow. In the 1960s, a panoramic terrace was added to its roof. From this terrace, you have spectacular views of Strasbourg’s historic center. You can admire Petite France with its canals, and the nearby Ponts Couverts with its medieval towers. Inside the Vauban Dam is a lapidarium. It displays ancient sculptures, gargoyles, and statues from Strasbourg Cathedral and Palais Rohan. The dam also hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. Recent restorations between 2010 and 2012 have preserved this landmark. Renovations included the terrace, a green roof, and accessibility improvements like staircases and an elevator. The stone facades have been reinforced. The Vauban Dam is located near the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Commanderie Saint-Jean. Locals use it as a shortcut, while tourists come to marvel at its history and the views it offers.
