On the edge of Solna, nestled between the vibrant city of Stockholm and the serene beauty of nature, lies Västra skogen. Västra skogen offers the best of both worlds. It combines urban convenience with the tranquility of the outdoors. This unique location makes it a haven for those who appreciate the proximity of bustling city life but also crave the peace and quiet of nature. Västra skogen residents enjoy easy access to Stockholm’s city center. They also have the beautiful harbor and beachfront at their doorstep. This includes Pampas Marina and Huvudsta Strandbad. Västra skogen was not always a residential haven. Before the mid-1960s, it was a hilly, forested area. It was known as Västra Ingentingskogen (Western Nothing Forest). This land belonged to Karlberg Palace and fell under the leasehold of a farm aptly named “Ingenting” (Nothing). Unlike the neighboring railway community of Huvudsta, Västra skogen was sparsely populated. The area consisted of a few older single-family and multi-family homes, some perched on the wooded hills, and others situated along the shores of Ulvsundasjön. A small industrial area known as Ekelund’s Industrial Area also existed near the shore on reclaimed land. One of the more well-known buildings in old Västra skogen was Ekelund, also known as Eklundskrogen. This inn was even mentioned in the poetry of Carl Michael Bellman. The last remaining building of this establishment, Ekelunds gård, was demolished in 1973. In the early 1960s, the city of Solna purchased Västra skogen from the state. It was then incorporated into the Huvudsta district. The area was developed between 1965 and 1975. Both Västra skogen and central Huvudsta were transformed into modern residential areas during this period. The present-day street layout also emerged during this time. Västra skogen’s transformation continued with improved transportation links. While steamship traffic to the area’s two piers, Ekelund and Bergdalsvik, existed since the mid-1800s via Karlbergskanalen, a more convenient connection was established in 1922 with the first bus route from Stockholm. The arrival of the metro in 1975 cemented Västra skogen’s accessibility and appeal. Today, Västra skogen boasts a mix of apartment buildings and office spaces, primarily constructed during the late 1960s and early 1970s, with newer additions in the 2000s. Shell’s former headquarters is located here, among other notable businesses. Johan Enbergs Väg, Armégatan, and Wiboms Väg serve as the area’s main streets. Granbackaskolan serves the community’s educational needs. For those seeking recreational activities, the large marina Pampas Marina is located at Karlbergs Strand, and Padelgården Solna offers padel tennis courts. The area is served by the Västra skogen metro station, a landmark in itself. It features one of the longest escalators in Sweden, a marvel of engineering stretching 66 meters long and ascending 33 meters. So next time you visit Västra skogen, remember its humble beginnings as a sparsely populated woodland, its transformation into a modern residential area, and the convenient blend of city and nature it offers to its residents and visitors.
