“A ruby at the giants’ feet”. That’s how architect Carl Nyrén described Västerortskyrkan. We stand before this architectural marvel a testament to mid-century modern design.

Västerortskyrkan in Vällingby isn’t just a church. It’s a bold statement. It’s a place where brutalist concrete meets spiritual reflection. Built in 1956 it stands in stark contrast to the surrounding buildings. It was designed by Carl Nyrén and Bertil Engstrand. Their vision was to create a church fitting for a new high-rise environment.

The asymmetry is striking. The building tapers towards the altar. The copper roof adds a touch of warmth. The interior is austere. Dramatic sloping walls of raw cast concrete dominate the space. Light streams indirectly from the high, angled ceiling. Windows placed in an alcove on the east side balance the western light. This creates a mesmerizing play of shadows. It enhances the concrete walls’ angles.

The church’s design wasn’t accidental. Nyrén drew inspiration from Le Corbusier’s post-war concrete architecture. Specifically Notre Dame du Haut in Ronchamp. This is a little-known fact. Both churches share an asymmetrical plan subdued daylight and a contemplative atmosphere. The renowned architect Le Corbusier himself visited Västerortskyrkan in 1958. He reportedly declared it one of three must-see churches in Europe. The others being St Peter’s Basilica in Rome and Notre Dame in Paris.

The interior is equally impressive. The baptismal font altar organ pews and the crucifix “The Eye of the Needle” were all designed by artist Fritz Sjöström. Originally the concrete walls were meant to be painted. Nyrén decided against it during a site visit. The raw concrete remains unpainted. It has aged beautifully. Soot from countless candles over six decades has subtly colored the walls. This adds to the church’s unique character. It’s a testament to the enduring power of raw materials.

Västerortskyrkan is more than just a place of worship. It is a space for contemplation. It is a living example of how architecture and spirituality can intersect. It’s a place where light shadows and texture combine to create an atmosphere of peace. The church continues to attract visitors from around the world. They come to experience its unique beauty and spiritual significance. They come to see a ruby among giants.
