Perhaps you’ve heard whispers of a place where history and modern life dance together. That place is Vasastaden. Formally known as Vasastan it is a vibrant district in central Stockholm. Today we will explore its story.
Vasastaden’s story starts in the late 19th century. Before the 1880s Vasastaden was a peripheral part of the city. The area transformed rapidly. Around 150 buildings sprung up before the decade’s end. This expansion followed a city plan from 1879. It widened streets to 18 meters. Odengatan was made even wider at 30 meters and adorned with greenery. Buildings were designed with Neo-Renaissance style architecture.
Let’s talk about Sibirien. It is the northeastern part of Vasastaden. “Sibirien” means Siberia in English. This area got its name from a time of poverty. Residents couldn’t afford proper heating. People said it was as cold and far away as Siberia.
Now let’s move on to Birkastaden. This is in the northwestern corner of Vasastaden. Birkastaden is named after the Viking settlement Birka. From spring through summer Rörstrandsgatan becomes a pedestrian street. It is filled with restaurants cafés and bars. Today Birkastan is one of Stockholm’s most exclusive residential areas.
Have you heard of Röda Bergen? This hilly area north of Birkastan was perfect for innovative city planning. P O Hallman designed the plan for Röda Bergen. World War I delayed its realization until the 1920s. Buildings here are traditionally five to six floors. They form a wall around Röda Bergen.
Let’s explore Atlas. The Atlas area lies east of the Sankt Eriksbron bridge. Until 1900 this was an industrial district. The Atlas area got its name from Atlas AB. This company’s workshops once occupied the area. Atlas features unique architecture. The buildings form a wall. Their exterior facades are six floors tall. The interior facades reach nine floors.
Vasastaden is known for its parks. Vasaparken is located between Odenplan and Sankt Eriksplan. It is a very active park. You can enjoy sports activities. There is also a playground for families. In winter the football pitch turns into an ice-skating rink.
