You might be surprised to learn that this building, right in front of you, was once a bustling hub of industry. The Vancouver Salt Co. Building, dating back to 1931, holds a unique place in the history of Vancouver’s South East False Creek neighbourhood. It started as a salt refinery, receiving raw salt shipped in from the San Francisco Bay Area. Imagine those huge barrels of salt being unloaded right here, at the very spot where we stand. The salt was then refined on site and sold to local industries, especially fish and food businesses, who utilized the salt for preservation. The building had a small dock where the salt was loaded and unloaded.

But times changed, and the Vancouver Salt Co. Building, like many other industrial buildings in this area, had to adapt. Shipping was replaced by railways, which led to a decline in salt use and a shift in the building’s purpose. In 1987, the Salt Co. Building became a paper recycling plant. It wasn’t until 2007 that a consortium was formed to renovate the building for a new purpose. This ambitious project, completed in 2009, aimed to preserve the history of the building and restore its original timber structure.

The Vancouver Salt Co. Building is now a testament to resourcefulness and the power of adaptation. It serves as a community space with a brew pub, coffee shop, and bakery. As you walk around it, take note of the details: the original timber piles that still support the building, the heavy timber trusses that create its distinctive shape, and the sign that proudly bears the name of its former occupant.
