“Did you know that UTS Rowing Club has been a launchpad for Olympic dreams since 1925?” Its story is one of community, athletic excellence and a relentless pursuit of gold. The UTS Rowing Club stands proudly on the shores of Iron Cove at Dobroyd Point. It has been a fixture here since 1926.

This is not just a club. It is a legacy carved from sweat, determination and the unwavering spirit of its members. Generations of athletes have found a supportive and welcoming environment here. Lifelong friendships were created here. The inclusive spirit remains a strong value. The pursuit of excellence is a goal.

Let’s rewind to the club’s early days. Initially known as Haberfield Rowing Club, it faced challenges securing council approval for its clubhouse. But in early 1926, the club opened its doors. Success soon followed, thanks to skilled coaching.

The club finished second in the junior pennant in 1926/27. They finished second in both senior and junior pennants in the 1927/28 seasons. Haberfield’s greatest triumph occurred in 1938/39. Both the premiership and the junior pennant were won. This feat was repeated in 1939/40.

During the war years, Haberfield continued to dominate. The club won each of the substitute point score competitions until 1947/48. Their consistent success led the NSW Rowing Association to declare that Haberfield had set a record of supremacy unequalled in New South Wales rowing.

The 1990s marked a turning point. In 1992, Haberfield Rowing Club aligned with the University of Technology, Sydney. It became UTS Haberfield Rowing Club. The merger brought increased financial support. It also enabled the hiring of Timothy McLaren as head coach.

Under McLaren’s guidance, from 1992 to 2007, UTS Haberfield rowers achieved remarkable success. Thirteen rowers made Australian Olympic rowing selection. They brought home eleven medals. The club was awarded the New South Wales Institute of Sport’s High-Performance Centre of the Year Award in 1999 and 2001.

The UTS Rowing Club’s facilities have been significantly upgraded. A substantial investment of over $8 million created a state-of-the-art facility at Haberfield. The improved facilities include an expansive rowers’ gymnasium. There is a weights lifting area. There is increased competition rowing boat racking. A new and enlarged floating pontoon allows rowers to transition smoothly between water and land. There is a stunning new restaurant, commercial kitchen and bar. These offer expansive views over the Iron Cove Bay rowing course. A new café engages with the public domain. Many bicycle storage racks are set within a new native landscape setting.

Today, the UTS Rowing Club stands as a beacon of sporting excellence. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a symbol of the university’s commitment to sport, health and well-being. As you stand here, you can almost hear the echoes of oars slicing through the water. You can feel the energy of athletes pushing their limits. The UTS Rowing Club is not just a place. It is an experience.
