Established on January 1 1964 the Institute of Atmospheric Physics CAS stands before us. A significant public research institution it’s part of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Its primary focus is researching Earth’s atmosphere and near space.

Imagine the scientists within. They study everything from lower atmospheric phenomena to the effects of climate change. They even investigate the ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Their research extends to near space and our solar system.

Beyond fundamental research the Institute designs scientific instruments and methods. They monitor and conduct special observations on Earth’s surface and in the higher atmosphere. They share their scientific data globally. Their research is published in renowned journals.

Did you know that the Institute manages several observatories? There’s the Milešovka and Kopisty meteorological observatories. The Panský Ves observatory and telemetry station also belongs to them. The Průhonice ionospheric station and the Dlouhá Louka joint observatory are also under their care.

Their research includes studies of extreme weather events. They have developed systems to predict rainfall intensity. They even use data from meteorological radars and mathematical models. Their work aids in flood prediction. One recent project focused on the Lake Most area. This artificial lake resulted from a coal mine’s reclamation. The scientists study the lake’s effect on the local atmosphere.

The Institute’s climatology department researches the impact of climate change on mortality. Their studies show increased mortality rates during heatwaves. Women are more affected than men. They are also developing climate change scenarios for agriculture and water resources.

Their aeronomy department studies the ionosphere. They provide data for alerts related to increased geomagnetic or ionospheric activity. They even developed a system for forecasting road surface conditions. This helps road maintenance services.

Their space physics department focuses on space plasma. They also study the magnetosphere and solar wind. They’ve been involved in numerous international projects like the Cluster mission. This involved multiple satellites for four-point measurements in the Earth’s magnetosphere. This mission helped discover the causes of high-energy relativistic electrons.

The Institute also has a library founded in 1961. It contains around 7000 volumes of domestic and foreign publications. It’s a valuable resource for researchers and the public.

The Institute’s achievements are impressive. It’s a hub for atmospheric and space research in the Czech Republic. Its contributions extend beyond scientific publications. It collaborates with other institutions. They also actively participate in outreach events.
