In 1939, a marvel of engineering arose on the Rio Pinheiros: the Usina Elevatória de Pedreira. This wasn’t just another dam. It was the world’s first reversible hydroelectric plant in commercial operation. The Usina Elevatória de Pedreira could generate power and pump water. Imagine the ingenuity of its creators, harnessing the river’s flow for energy and then reversing the process to control water levels. The Usina Elevatória de Pedreira was originally built by The São Paulo Tramway, Light and Power Company. The vision behind it was to enhance the Henry Borden power plant’s generating capacity. The project included rerouting and reversing the Rio Pinheiros, creating the Billings Reservoir, and constructing the Traição and Usina Elevatória de Pedreira pumping stations. This interconnected system exemplifies a remarkable feat of engineering, seamlessly integrating multiple structures to maximize energy production and water management. The Usina Elevatória de Pedreira itself stands 25 meters tall, an imposing structure against the São Paulo skyline. Eight massive units comprise the plant.
