The Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Samoan Pentecostal community in New Zealand. The story of the Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God begins in the early 1960s. Samoan Holiness/Pentecostals arrived in New Zealand, carrying the message of Pentecostalism. Pioneers like Reverend Makisua Fatialofa and his wife, Evangelist Mauosamoa, played a crucial role in establishing this vibrant community. They, along with others, laid the foundation for the first ethnically Samoan fellowship aligned with the Assemblies of God in New Zealand. This fellowship contributed significantly to the growth of the Assemblies of God, becoming one of the nation’s fastest-growing churches. The Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God is part of a larger movement. By 2005, there were 89 Samoan Assemblies of God congregations throughout New Zealand. In that year, a desire for self-governance led to the formation of a separate body with its own constitution. This resulted in a split, with 45 churches forming a breakaway group while 40 remained under the Assemblies of God in New Zealand umbrella. Despite this separation, both groups continue to collaborate and work alongside each other. The Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God, like others in the movement, upholds the core beliefs of salvation, baptism in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, divine healing, and the Second Coming of Christ. These beliefs shape the spiritual life of the community. The Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God also shares a vibrant history with the global Samoan Assemblies of God community. New Zealand has hosted several World Conferences, playing a significant role in the international fellowship. These gatherings have brought together thousands of members from around the world, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. Today, the Upper Hutt Samoan Assembly of God continues to thrive, serving as a spiritual home for the Samoan community in Upper Hutt and a beacon of faith in the wider Wellington region.
