Have you seen the impressive oak tree that stands tall and proud in the heart of Upper Hutt? It is the living symbol of Upper Hutt Primary School, a place that has been shaping young minds for over 150 years. You are standing on a spot where generations have walked, learning and growing. Imagine the stories this oak tree could tell. Back in 1864, the first students gathered in the Upper Hutt Catholic Church, eager to learn their ABCs from their first teacher, Mr T. Sullivan. It wasn’t long before the school outgrew its home and a new building was established in Trentham. From 1878, as more and more children wanted to learn at Upper Hutt, the Rose of Sharon Hall was rented as an extra classroom. But the school kept on growing! It was finally in 1909 that it settled here on Martin Street. Even though the original building from Trentham didn’t make it to the new location, the spirit of learning lives on in Upper Hutt Primary School. It has stood strong through world wars and changing times, always ensuring that the future generation is provided with the best education possible. Think about the countless children who have walked these grounds, their laughter echoing through the halls, their dreams taking flight. The history of Upper Hutt Primary School is a captivating story of resilience and dedication, a story that is still being written every day.
