Has anyone ever noticed how a statue can seem different each time you see it? The Unterwegs Statue, right here in Stuttgart, changes for me with the light. Sometimes it’s a somber figure, lost in thought. Other times, the bronze gleams, and she seems ready to stride off down the street. Unterwegs, by the way, means “on the way” or “en route”. It perfectly captures the spirit of this bronze woman created by Edith Erdle-Wissler. The Unterwegs Statue was installed in 1990, a life-sized bronze figure. She’s not some grand historical figure or mythical goddess. She’s one of us, eternally on the go. I like to think she represents the constant motion of Stuttgart, a city always moving forward. Stuttgart, as you may know, is known as the “Cradle of the Automobile.” It’s the birthplace of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. This city is about innovation, about the journey.
