Imagine a mosaic of diverse habitats thriving amid Stuttgart’s urban landscape. This is Unteres Feuerbachtal mit Hangwäldern und Umgebung. It is a nature reserve that proves the coexistence of urban development and ecological value.

Designated in 1996, this 47.5-hectare area protects a variety of biomes. Its rather long name suggests the intention behind protecting various biomes. Unteres Feuerbachtal mit Hangwäldern und Umgebung features a renatured section of the Feuerbach stream. Three hillside forests add to the area’s charm. Dry meadows and orchards complete this ecological haven.

The primary goal is to create a network of interconnected habitats. This would happen in an area intensively used for agriculture between the Feuerbachtal and Kornwestheim. The Feuerbachtal and the north-facing Eschbachwald are central. These areas form the core of this nature reserve.

In the humid hillside forest, nutrient-rich soil supports unique flora. Blaustern, Hohler Lerchensporn, and Große Schlüsselblume thrive here. The Feuerbach stream now boasts a natural streambed. It features many bends, calm water areas, and bankside vegetation.

A reclaimed shell limestone quarry has become a mosaic of different biotopes. Pools serve as breeding grounds for amphibians. The woodland offers a habitat for birds. The quarry walls offer nesting sites for birds and insects.

On the adjacent “Kreuzrain” semi-dry grassland, the Karthäuser Nelke blooms. It blooms in large numbers well into late summer. The area supports a variety of threatened bird species. These include tree pipits, hobbies, and lesser whitethroats. Also present are middle spotted woodpeckers, collared flycatchers, and stock doves.

To guide visitors, ten information panels were installed in 2011. These panels explain the Unteres Feuerbachtal mit Hangwäldern’s flora, fauna, history, and conservation efforts. These panels are spread throughout the extensive area. One can find information about the Eschbachwald. It is a near-natural deciduous forest of beech, sycamore, and pedunculate oak. This forest is designated as a protected forest.

An old abandoned quarry now serves as an important biotope. Another panel addresses species protection. Magerwiesenbiotop lies amid intensively farmed fields. It offers views over the Feuerbachtal towards Stuttgart-Freiberg.

Descending into the Feuerbachtal, one can find panels describing dry grassland biotopes. Further along, a panel highlights the collaborative conservation efforts. These efforts are between state authorities and private initiatives. Continuing along an ascending path, another panel discusses the Biotopverbund. Finally, there is the Weidenbrunnen, dealing with pollard willows.

The Viehwegle path leads through a successional forest. It goes down into the Feuerbachtal. Remnants of former vineyard walls are visible. They remind us that wine was grown on this southern slope in earlier times.

The Unteres Feuerbachtal mit Hangwäldern und Umgebung shows what conservation can achieve. It is a valuable ecological area. It supports a variety of plant and animal species. It is a place for recreation and education. It also demonstrates Stuttgart’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
