“Thirty-one kilometres north of Sydney’s CBD lies a place where UNSW conducts ground-breaking research. It is the UNSW Cowan Field Station. This field station is maintained for research and animal holding or breeding. It is an integral part of the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences.
The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences was formed in January 2002. It came from the School of Biological Science, School of Geology, and the Physical Geographers. The school maintains programs offered by the former disciplines. Students can study pure Biological Science, Geology, or Geography. New BEES courses make interdisciplinary study much easier.
UNSW Cowan Field Station supports the school’s research. The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences has an outstanding reputation for quality research. This research occurs both within Australia and internationally. BEES attracts over $2.5 million in external research funding. The funding comes from the Australian Research Council and other sources.
Research within BEES is clustered within two general thematic areas. These areas are Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The other is Environmental Change and Sustainability. Within these themes are four focal points for research. They include Water and Sustainable Ecosystems. Other focal points are Vertebrate Ecology and Conservation. Temperate Marine Ecosystems. Also Spatial Information Systems.
Other areas of research interest include resource management. There is also a diversity of interests within the biological and earth sciences. UNSW also has field stations at Smiths Lake for teaching and field research. The University also uses its Arid Zone field station at Fowlers Gap in north-western New South Wales extensively.
