Gazing up at the University of Tokyo General Library, can you sense the weight of knowledge? It’s a tangible presence here, woven into the very fabric of this grand building. The University of Tokyo General Library officially opened on April 12, 1877. This was a pivotal moment, marking the birth of Japan’s first university. The library traces its lineage back to Edo-era libraries. One such ancestor is the Bansho Shirabesho. Imagine scholars poring over ancient texts within those hallowed halls. The library found its home in Hongo in August 1884. Author Soseki Natsume vividly described the library around this time in his novel “Sanshiro”. It’s a glimpse into a bygone era, bringing the past to life. Tragedy struck on September 1, 1923. The Great Kanto Earthquake ravaged Tokyo, and the library was not spared. A devastating fire consumed the original building. Along with it went 750,000 books. This included precious collections like 20,000 books from Friedrich Max Müller and Takizawa Bakin’s handwritten scripts. From the ashes rose a new hope. John D. Rockefeller donated $2 million, a staggering sum in 1923, equivalent to about $36 million today. His generosity played a crucial role in the library’s reconstruction. Rockefeller’s words, etched on a plaque, resonate even now: “I shall regard it as a great privilege to be permitted to hasten the day when your University…will again be provided with adequate facilities.” The University of Tokyo General Library you see today, completed in 1928, embodies this sentiment. This building serves as both a library and the headquarters for the entire UTokyo Library System. A recent renovation in the late 2010s brought the library into the 21st century. A 46-meter-deep automatic underground storage now houses 3 million books. The University of Tokyo General Library stands as a testament to resilience, a beacon of knowledge, and a bridge between the past and the future.
