Established in 1989 the University of the Potomac has a rich history. It began as the Potomac Educational Foundation. Its initial goal was to provide higher education. In 1991 it became Potomac College a two-year institution. It served working adults seeking to complete their degrees. It was granted approval to award Bachelor of Science degrees. Expansion continued with Virginia campus approval in 1998. Courses began in Herndon Virginia in 2001. The college pursued regional accreditation. This was granted in 2006 by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Associate degree programs launched in 2005. Online programs followed in 2007. In 2013 Potomac College was renamed University of the Potomac. This reflected its academic growth. The Washington DC campus moved to 1401 H Street NW. This is close to the White House.
