Didn’t you always wonder how the University of Sydney Cumberland campus came to be? It is a story of pioneering health education and adaptation. The campus has offered diverse health sciences courses since 1975. Let’s explore its history.
The University of Sydney traces its Faculty of Medicine and Health back to 1856. Only four years prior, the University Senate established the Faculty of Medicine. Anderson Stuart began classes in 1883. He championed university-based medical education in Australia. This was at a time when apprenticeships and hospital schools trained most English practitioners. The first medical class had only six students. But it grew to nearly two hundred by the turn of the century.
The Anderson Stuart Building opened in 1889. It housed the first medical school in Australia at the University of Sydney. Education expanded to include pharmacy and dentistry. Public health, nursing, and health sciences were included too. This led to the Sydney Pharmacy School and the Sydney Dental School. The Sydney School of Public Health, Sydney Nursing School, and Sydney School of Health Sciences followed.
These new disciplines joined the University. They continued to pioneer medicine and health education. Both the Sydney Dental School and the Sydney School of Public Health were the first of their kind in Australia. Nursing staff advocated the shift of nursing education to the tertiary system. This was an instrumental step for nursing as a profession.
Healthcare changed significantly in Australia and overseas. The University of Sydney responded. It brought together dentistry, medicine, and medical sciences. Nursing, pharmacy, public health, and health sciences also came together. They formed the Faculty of Medicine and Health. This faculty includes ten clinical schools across Sydney and regional NSW. It enables an integrated approach to health research and education.
The flatiron-styled Sydney Dental Hospital opened in 1940. The original building was damaged and needed replacing. It is home to the University of Sydney School of Dentistry. The Edward Ford Building opened in 1930. It houses the University of Sydney School of Public Health.
The Cumberland College of Health Sciences was established in 1975. It was previously the NSW College of Paramedical Studies. It became the Faculty of Health Sciences. The college taught physiotherapy and occupational therapy courses. Speech pathology and orthoptics were also taught. Postgraduate courses were available for registered nurses. The college introduced the first three-year Diploma of Applied Science Nursing program. This program led to registration as a nurse in New South Wales.
In 2018, the Faculty of Medicine and Health was established. It brought together the schools of dentistry and medicine. Medical sciences, nursing, pharmacy, and public health were included. In 2019, the Faculty of Health Sciences joined the Faculty of Medicine and Health. It became the Sydney School of Health Sciences.
In 2021, the new health precinct opened. This included the Susan Wakil Health Building. It united these disciplines into a single precinct for the first time.
