Established in 1992, the University of Namibia started with a vision. Parliament acted to create it on August 31. This act followed a recommendation from the Commission on Higher Education. Its birth intertwined with Namibia’s new nationhood in 1990.
UNAM has grown to serve over 30000 students. Around 2200 staff members support them across various campuses. The University of Namibia’s international presence keeps expanding each year. More and more students from around the world are enrolling.

The University of Namibia has many international partnerships. One notable partnership is with the Sam Nujoma Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre. It involves institutions like the Namibian National Marine Information and Research Centre. Other partners include the Agouron Institute, the University of Minnesota, ETH Zurich, and Swiss i-Research & Training.
UNAM’s Regional Connect Project links academia, government, private sectors, and civil society. This positions the University of Namibia as a gateway. It allows SADC researchers and innovators to showcase their work. They can also tap into key innovation centers globally. Partners include the Research Institute for Innovation and Sustainability in South Africa. The National Business Technology Centre in Zambia also participates. The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology was founded in 2008. It emerged from the Department of Engineering and Technology. Sam Nujoma conducted the groundbreaking ceremony. The Ongwediva town council donated land for the faculty.
