From a simple high school for boys in 1829, the University of Cape Town has blossomed into a vibrant hub of learning and research. It stands proudly beneath Devil’s Peak, a testament to its rich history and enduring pursuit of knowledge. The University of Cape Town, or UCT as it’s often called, originally known as the South African College, didn’t gain full university status until 1918. This makes it the oldest university in South Africa, and a cornerstone of higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The discovery of gold and diamonds in the late 19th century spurred the university’s growth. The demand for skilled professionals in the mining industry led to the establishment of dedicated science laboratories and departments of mineralogy and geology at the University of Cape Town. The university’s commitment to progress extended beyond the sciences. In 1886, a small group of women were allowed to attend chemistry classes as a trial run. Their exceptional performance paved the way for the permanent admission of women students in 1887, a tribute to Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The early 20th century saw the establishment of the Medical School at the University of Cape Town and the introduction of engineering courses. The Alfred Beit bequest and donations from mining magnates Julius Wernher and Otto Beit solidified the university’s financial foundation, allowing for its expansion and move to the Groote Schuur estate in 1928. This land, bequeathed by Cecil Rhodes, provided a stunning backdrop for the university’s centenary celebrations just a year later. The University of Cape Town’s history is not without its struggles. During the apartheid era, it earned the nickname “Moscow on the Hill” for its unwavering opposition to the regime. The university slowly began admitting black students in the 1920s. However, it wasn’t until the 1980s and 90s that the university embraced a deliberate process of internal transformation, dramatically increasing its black student population. The University of Cape Town continues to strive for inclusivity and diversity. It grapples with the complexities of its past, including the legacy of Cecil Rhodes, whose statue was removed from campus in 2015 after student protests. Today, the University of Cape Town is home to around 30,000 students and boasts a diverse student body. It’s a place where history intertwines with innovation, and where the pursuit of knowledge knows no bounds.
