How come this place isn’t part of Vancouver? Many visitors to the University Endowment Lands find themselves pondering this very question. Here we stand, just a stone’s throw from the bustling city, yet we’ve entered a unique territory. The University Endowment Lands, or UEL as it’s often called, is an unincorporated area. This means it doesn’t belong to any municipality. Instead, it’s directly managed by the provincial government. The story of the UEL begins in 1907 with a grand vision – to establish a prestigious university for British Columbia. To fund this dream, the provincial government set aside a vast area of Crown land, two million acres to be exact, initially in the Cariboo Region. However, life, as it often does, had other plans. By 1920, it became clear that the Cariboo lands wouldn’t generate the necessary funds. The focus shifted to 3,000 acres here in Point Grey, the land auctioned off to fuel the university’s growth. What we see today as the University Endowment Lands is a blend of residential and commercial areas. But the heart of the UEL is undoubtedly Pacific Spirit Regional Park, a sprawling green sanctuary encompassing over half of the area. Imagine a lush tapestry of towering trees, winding trails, and the scent of cedar and fir filling the air. This park stands as a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving nature. But the UEL is not just about the past. It’s very much a living, breathing community with its own unique character. The University Endowment Lands, a place where history, nature, and a distinct community spirit intertwine, offering a unique perspective on this captivating city.
