Why is this ultramodern building so special? You are standing in front of the Universität Wien – Biozentrum. It might not look like much from the outside, but the Universität Wien – Biozentrum is no ordinary university building. Completed in 2021, it’s a beacon of modern architecture and sustainable design. This striking building is the result of an international competition. Architects Karsten Liebner and Marcel Backhaus beat out 40 other proposals with their sleek, streamlined design. The Universität Wien – Biozentrum isn’t just a pretty face. It’s designed to be incredibly energy efficient. The roof, for example, is designed with special lamellae. These lamellae help to hide the bulky equipment needed for the labs and offices inside. The building houses large parts of the Faculty of Life Sciences and parts of the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science at the University of Vienna. The Biology and Botany Library also calls this innovative building home. The Universität Wien – Biozentrum is a testament to Vienna’s commitment to both cutting-edge research and environmental responsibility.
