The Universitu00e0 di Torino Istituto di Fisiologia boasts a rich history. Its origins trace back to 1851. That year Secondo Berruti established a laboratory for experimental physiology. This laboratory was reorganized between 1861 and 1865. The impetus came from Francesco De Sanctis. He was the Minister of Public Instruction for the newly formed Kingdom of Italy. De Sanctis appointed Jakob Moleschott to head the physiology department. Moleschott remained there from 1861 to 1879. The institute quickly became a model for scientific institutions in Turin.
