Universidade de Guarulhos

Founded in 1970 the Universidade Guarulhos stands proudly. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet gathering. Six teachers from the Colegio Claretiano met. They formed the Associacao Paulista de Educacao e Cultura or APEC. They sought to create a university in Guarulhos. Another group the Associacao Educacional Presidente Kennedy had similar ambitions. To avoid a clash they cleverly chose a neutral name. The resulting institution became the Faculdade Farias Brito. This was a clever tactic. It masked the university’s location. The Ministry of Education approved the Faculdade Farias Brito in 1970. It opened with five courses. These were in social sciences letters mathematics pedagogy and chemistry. The initial classes were held in the Colegio Claretiano. Soon however it needed more space. A new building opened in 1972. In 1979 a merger was proposed. This would unite the Faculdade Farias Brito the Faculdades Guarulhos and the Faculdade Integrada de Guarulhos. The aim was to form the Universidade Guarulhos. Despite support from the Guarulhos city government the merger failed. The Faculdade Farias Brito then sought to become a university. In 1985 the Ministry of Education granted its wish. The Faculdade Farias Brito became the Universidade Guarulhos. Today the UnG as it’s known boasts thousands of students and multiple campuses. It is a testament to the vision of those six teachers. Their quiet meeting laid the foundation for a major institution. The Universidade Guarulhos thrives. It continues to educate and shape the future of Guarulhos and beyond.
