Step inside Union Temple Baptist Church. Feel the spirit. This isn’t just any church. It’s a pillar of the Anacostia community a testament to faith and resilience. Founded in 1967 by Reverend Chester L Smallwood it quickly became a beacon of hope. Reverend Smallwood’s vision was clear a place of worship for everyone. A family affair as they say. But after a period of illness Reverend Smallwood could not continue his service. Reverend Simon Beamon stepped in. He was assisted by Reverends William Roundtree and John Moss.

Then in 1973 Reverend Willie F Wilson was chosen to lead. His leadership spanned decades. It was a period of incredible growth and transformation. Against all odds he oversaw the construction of a magnificent $3.5 million church complex. This architectural marvel stands proudly in the heart of Anacostia. The beauty of the Kente-stained glass windows is breathtaking. But there’s more. Look closely.

Notice the 30-foot by 19-foot mural depicting the Last Supper. It’s not just any Last Supper. It features a Black Christ. The twelve disciples are depicted as twelve significant African and African Americans. See Martin Luther King Jr. Rosa Parks and Malcolm X among them. It’s a powerful statement of faith and heritage. This mural alone makes Union Temple Baptist Church a must-see.

Under Reverend Wilson’s guidance the church flourished. Membership grew to over 8000. He didn’t just focus on spiritual growth. He understood the church’s role in the community. Union Temple became deeply involved in social programs and ministries. They addressed issues like HIV AIDS and assisted those transitioning from welfare to work. They provided residential and counseling services for at-risk youth.

Reverend Wilson’s inspirational leadership transformed lives for many decades. In 2019 he retired. He passed the mantle of leadership to his daughter Dr Anika Wilson-Brown. She continues his legacy. She carries on his vision of faith service and community. Union Temple Baptist Church remains a vital part of Anacostia. It is a place of worship a community center and a symbol of hope. It’s a church that truly embodies its motto It’s a family affair. A place where everyone is welcome.
