Established in 1946 Union Hospital boasts a rich history. It began as the Public Health Center of Bao’an County. The name changed to The People’s Health Center of Bao’an County in 1949. It was later renamed The People’s Hospital of Nantou District in 1983. Finally in 1991 after Nanshan District’s establishment it became The People’s Hospital of Nanshan District.
Union Hospital’s journey is marked by continuous growth and adaptation. In 2005 it adopted the supplementary name Shenzhen Sixth People’s Hospital. A significant milestone occurred in 2009. A partnership with Wuhan Union Hospital led to a rebranding. The hospital became Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital.
This remarkable transformation reflects Union Hospital’s commitment to progress. In 2019 it earned the title of Internet-based Hospital of Nanshan Hospital. Today Union Hospital proudly uses three official names. The primary name is Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital. The secondary name is The People’s Hospital of Nanshan District. The third name is Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Internet-based Hospital.
The hospital’s evolution showcases a dedication to excellence. It became a 2A hospital in 1995. It evolved into a clinical teaching base for medical schools in Guangdong in 2003. In 2004 it became a non-directly affiliated hospital of Guangdong Medical College. The journey continued with 3A comprehensive hospital status in Guangdong in 2011. In 2012 it became a non-directly affiliated school of clinical medicine of Guangdong Medical University. Union Hospital in 2016 passed the 3A hospital reaccreditation. In 2017 it gained status as a national standardized residency training center.
Union Hospital’s accolades demonstrate its high standards. In 2019’s National Tertiary Public Hospital Performance Appraisal it received an A+ grade. It ranked 110th out of 1183 public comprehensive hospitals nationwide. This places it among the top four public tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Shenzhen. It’s also listed as the 43rd best out of 80 hospitals in the Greater Bay Area. Union Hospital is a model of medical excellence in China. Its commitment to advancement is undeniable.
