Established in 1994, UNIFESP stands as a beacon of higher education in SÃo Paulo. But its roots stretch back further. It began as a private medical school in 1933.
The Escola Paulista de Medicina laid the foundation. It was located in Vila Clementino. This school expanded adding nursing in 1938. The Hospital SÃo Paulo opened in 1940. It became the school’s teaching hospital.
For years the institution relied on private funds and government support. In 1956, it became a federal entity. It wasn’t until 1994 that it transformed. It became the Universidade Federal de SÃo Paulo, or UNIFESP. Initially, UNIFESP specialized in health sciences.
A major shift occurred after 2005. The Brazilian Federal Government initiated the University Reform Program. This program known as REUNI broadened UNIFESP’s scope. The university expanded into multiple disciplines.
Today UNIFESP has six campuses. The oldest remains in Vila Clementino focusing on health. Other campuses emerged in Guarulhos for humanities. Diadema focuses on science and engineering. Santos specializes in health and marine sciences. SÃo José dos Campos is dedicated to computational and engineering fields. Osasco focuses on business.
A new campus is planned for Santo Amaro in SÃo Paulo. Despite its recent expansion UNIFESP remains prestigious. It attracts students from Brazil and neighboring countries.
UNIFESP offers a wide array of courses. Campus Vila Clementino offers medicine and nursing. They also provide biomedicine and speech therapy. Health technologies like ophthalmology and radiology are taught here too.
The Baixada Santista campus offers nutrition and physical therapy. They have psychology and occupational therapy programs. Social work and marine sciences are also available.
Guarulhos focuses on humanities. History, social sciences, philosophy and pedagogy are taught here. Students can study art history. They can also study languages like Portuguese and English.
Diadema focuses on sciences. They offer chemistry and chemical engineering. Pharmacy and biology programs are also available. Students can study physics and mathematics. Environmental sciences are also taught.
SÃo José dos Campos offers computer science. Computational mathematics is also available. They have science and technology programs. Materials and biomedical engineering are offered. Biotechnology and computer engineering round out the offerings.
Osasco is dedicated to business related fields. UNIFESP is recognized for excellence. It receives high rankings from various organizations. Times Higher Education ranked it among the best in Latin America. The Ranking Universitário da Folha de S.Paulo also places it highly.
UNIFESP continues to evolve. It aims to provide quality education. It also strives to contribute to research. The university seeks to impact Brazilian society positively. It achieves this through various programs.
