This institute, part of the Federal University of São Paulo’s Diadema campus, is a testament to a vision. A vision of bringing together environmental, chemical, and pharmaceutical sciences.

The Unifesp Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas was born in 2007. It was part of the REUNI program, a federal government initiative aimed at expanding and restructuring federal universities. Located in Diadema, the campus boasts a diverse range of programs. It offers undergraduate courses, postgraduate studies, and extension courses. The institute isn’t confined to a single building. It’s spread across four locations within Diadema. This includes the José de Filippi unit, near the Billings Reservoir, a protected area. These units house classrooms, laboratories, and research facilities. They support the institute’s mission of teaching, research, and community engagement.

The Unifesp Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas offers seven undergraduate courses. These cover areas such as environmental science, biological sciences, chemical engineering, pharmacy, and chemistry. For most of these programs, admission is through the Unified Selection System (SISU). However, biological sciences and medicine have a mixed system. This combines the National High School Exam (ENEM) score with a supplementary exam.

The institute’s commitment to advanced studies is evident in its postgraduate programs. It houses eight programs, including environmental analysis, bio-chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, and ecology. These programs contribute to a thriving research environment. They have produced over 340 graduates, contributing to the academic and scientific community. The institute is divided into eight departments. These include Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Chemical Engineering. Each department is staffed by a team of experts. They’re dedicated to advancing knowledge and innovation in their respective fields.

The Unifesp Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas’s story is intertwined with the city of Diadema. In 2005, Mayor José de Filippi Júnior, the city council, and Unifesp’s rector initiated the campus development. The city donated a 400,000-square-meter plot of land in the Morungaba area, near the Billings Reservoir. Though the campus hasn’t yet occupied that specific site, the city’s contribution highlights the collaborative spirit behind the institute’s creation. The Unifesp Instituto de Ciências Ambientais, Químicas e Farmacêuticas stands as a beacon of knowledge and innovation. It embodies the power of collaboration between local government, academia, and the community. It’s more than just an institute. It’s a hub where science and society connect, fostering a brighter future for Brazil.
