How often do we pause to consider the hidden tragedies etched into the landscape around us? Right here stands a plaque. It marks the Unfall des Schiffes Čumbier am 22.10.1996. This memorial marks a tragic accident. It serves as a somber reminder of a fateful day on the Danube.
This plaque commemorates the sinking of the Slovak tugboat Čumbier on October 22, 1996. The incident occurred near the Freudenau power plant. This plant was still under construction. The Čumbier was pushing a barge down the Danube. Record floodwaters made the river’s current menacing.
The Čumbier missed the passage into the shipping channel. It struck the sluice. This caused it to jackknife with the barge. The river’s current carried it downstream. It pinned the vessel against a water regulating weir. The river’s force sucked it down. Eight of the nine Slovak crew members died. Emil Simek survived because he jumped from the vessel.
The Čumbier was located two kilometers from the site of the accident. Heinz Kaupa was a member of the board of directors of the Austrian shipping company Donaukraft. He provided this information. Another spokesman said the tug was found just 200 meters downstream. It was by the pillar of a temporary road bridge.
The accident sparked controversy. Reinhard Vorderwinkler from the Austrian Shipping Authority blamed the captain. He said that the captain lost control of the boat. The Slovak Shipping Authority denied this claim. Juraj Bohunský was the SPD’s spokesman. He questioned why the craft was allowed entry under such conditions.
The accident was the worst in SPD’s history. It was the biggest accident on the Austrian section of this waterway since World War II. The power station sustained no damage.
The Čumbier tragedy prompted investigations and accusations. It also inspired compassion. A fund was created for the families of the deceased sailors.
