Únětický potok

From the gentle ripples of its source in Kněževes, the Únětický potok embarks on a 15-kilometer journey. This seemingly unassuming stream, named after the village of Únětice, holds a wealth of history and natural beauty. The Únětický potok flows through a diverse landscape, shaping the terrain and influencing the lives of those who dwell along its banks. It meanders through Tuchoměřice, Statenice, and Černý Vůl, before reaching Únětice, the village that lends the stream its name. From there, the Únětický potok continues its journey, marking the border of Prague. The lower section of the Únětický potok carves a deep valley with striking rock walls. This picturesque valley is protected as part of the Údolí Únětického potoka Nature Reserve and the Roztocký háj-Tiché údolí Nature Reserve. These protected areas offer a peaceful escape from the bustling city, with lush forests and tranquil meadows. The Únětický potok’s significance is not just limited to its natural beauty. It played a role in the history of the region, powering numerous mills along its course. These mills, listed meticulously in historical records, tell a story of industry and ingenuity. From the Čermákův mlýn in Kněževes to the Braunerův mlýn in Roztoky, each mill represents a chapter in the story of the Únětický potok. One mill in particular stands out: the Trojanův mlýn. This mill achieved a certain fame in the 1970s when it served as a filming location for a television series. The series, based on Flaubert’s novel, chronicled the misadventures of two Parisian clerks, Bouvard and Pécuchet. Another mill, the Týmův mlýn, met a different fate, leaving behind only a millpond and the remnants of a weir. As the Únětický potok flows toward its confluence with the Vltava River in Roztoky, it passes near the Roztoky Castle, a local landmark and museum. Here, the stream concludes its journey, merging its waters with the mighty Vltava. The Únětický potok is more than just a stream.
