A water nymph’s tale whispers through Zurich’s air embodied in the artwork named Undine. She is not just a sculpture. Undine is a reminder of ancient myths. The story of Undine begins with Paracelsus. He was a Renaissance alchemist. He described Undines as water elementals. These beings lacked human souls.

Paracelsus believed each element had its spirits. Earth had gnomes. Air had sylphs. Fire had salamanders. Water had Undines. Undines could gain a soul. They had to marry a human. This union was risky. Offending her near water meant losing her forever.

Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué wrote a novella. It was called Undine in 1811. It told of an Undine marrying a knight. She gained a soul. The knight left her for a human. She had to kill him. She wept him to death.

The name Undine comes from Latin. Unda means wave or water. Undines are usually female. This fits the Greek idea of water. They live in pools and waterfalls. Their singing can be heard over water.

Undine’s story appears in many forms. Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid was inspired by her. Jean Giraudoux wrote a play called Ondine. There is also a ballet. It was choreographed by Frederick Ashton. Margot Fonteyn danced as Undine.

The myth touches modern culture too. There is a piano piece named Undine. Seamus Heaney wrote a poem from Undine’s view. Even video games reference her.

Sadly a medical condition got named after a misunderstanding of Undine’s tale. Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome is also known as Ondine’s curse. Doctors misinterpreted the story. They thought Undine cursed her lover. In the original story, she was not vengeful. She tried to save him.

The artwork here reminds us of Undine. She is more than a myth. She is a symbol. She represents love. She embodies sacrifice. She shows the connection between humans and nature. Look closely at Undine. She whispers tales of water and soul. She speaks of love and loss. She reminds us of ancient magic. She is part of Zurich. She is part of our world. She is Undine.
