Ten towering residential buildings rise before you. This is Un Chau Estate. A testament to Hong Kong’s innovative approach to public housing. Its history is woven into the very fabric of Cheung Sha Wan.

Un Chau Estate didn’t always look like this. Before its redevelopment it was known as Un Chau Street Estate. That older estate comprised eight residential blocks. They were completed way back in 1969. But time marches on. By the 1990s and 2000s those buildings were demolished. New structures replaced them. The estate was reborn as Un Chau Estate.

The transformation wasn’t a simple swap. It was done in phases. Phases 1 and 3 created six residential buildings. One of those was specifically designed for senior citizens. A shopping center was also part of this redevelopment. Construction was completed between 1998 and 1999. Phases 2 and 4 added five more buildings in 2008. Then came Phase 5. This phase was built on the site of the old Cheung Sha Wan Factory Estate. Three residential buildings and an ancillary facility were built there. That included car parks an elderly center and a family services center. Work started in 2007 finishing in 2012.

Un Chau Estate isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a community. In 2016 the population was recorded at 18482 people. An overwhelming majority 97% were of Chinese ancestry. The median monthly household income was 14930 Hong Kong dollars. The estate even provided alternate housing for those displaced from nearby So Uk Estate.

Look closely. Each building has its own name. Un Hong House Un Wo House Un Fung House and many more. Each tells a silent story of lives lived within these walls. Un Chau Estate is more than just housing. It represents Hong Kong’s constant evolution its resilience and its commitment to providing for its people. It is a vibrant part of the city’s tapestry. A true reflection of Hong Kong’s dynamic energy.
