Picture Umi no Mori Park a sprawling green oasis in Tokyo. This isn’t just any park. It’s a testament to urban renewal and community spirit. Umi no Mori Park was built on a former landfill a mountain of waste transformed into a beautiful forest.

Imagine a vast expanse of 60 hectares. That’s roughly 88 football fields worth of trees. These aren’t just any trees either. They were painstakingly grown from acorns by elementary school students and volunteers. Around 240000 trees were planted with the help of 23000 Tokyo residents. Companies and NPOs also played a significant role in bringing this project to life. It’s an example of resource circulation and community collaboration.

This incredible feat of environmental engineering isn’t just about planting trees. It’s about creating a wind passage to mitigate the heat island effect. It’s about transforming waste into something beautiful and useful. Umi no Mori Park is a unique ecological project. It recycles soil using branches and leaves from Tokyo’s parks and street trees. It even incorporates waste soil from water purification plants.

Umi no Mori Park boasts a rich variety of attractions. You can relax in the Gathering Grassland. Explore the Fureai Forest. Enjoy breathtaking views from Higashi no Koyama and Nishi no Koyama. The Waiwai Hiroba offers playground equipment and a barbecue area. There’s even a visitor center to learn more about this incredible urban green space.

The park officially opened on March 28 2025. A three-day grand opening event celebrated this unique park. It showcased the charm of Umi no Mori Park’s vast nature. A mascot character Umino Morisuke a mythical creature discovered in the park was unveiled. His special skills are tree climbing playing in the water and picking up trash. He loves kids. He embodies the park’s spirit of environmental stewardship and community engagement. Umino Morisuke is a reminder that even in a bustling metropolis like Tokyo nature and community spirit can thrive. Umi no Mori Park stands as a symbol of hope and a testament to the power of collaboration.
