Step into the past. Stand before the UMC Savage Faith & Ministry Center. This unassuming building holds a rich history. It’s nestled within a 1900 farmhouse. The UMC Savage Faith & Ministry Center wasn’t always here. It started its life as a simple 1900s farmhouse. Purchased in 1997 the church repurposed it. The church needed more space. More classrooms and offices. The original structure was transformed. Several garages were cleverly renovated. They became two large classrooms. Imagine the work that went into that. One classroom boasts a movable divider. It allows for flexible meeting spaces. The pastor and secretary have offices on the first floor. They are located conveniently in the front of the building. The UMC Savage Faith & Ministry Center wasn’t just built. Its story is woven into the fabric of Savage Maryland. The Methodist presence in Savage dates back to around 1810. Think about that. The early ministers traveled by horseback. Sometimes they even walked to Savage. It took them a whole month to get there. In 1888 Mr William Henry Baldwin made a significant contribution. He gave the land for what became the original ‘Brick Church’. He also funded its construction. The congregation was responsible for supporting it. In 1939 three Methodist denominations united. They formed the Methodist Church. This brought together the Methodist Episcopal. The Grace Methodist Episcopal Church South. And the Methodist Protestant churches. By 1944 they had a single congregation. They decided to use the ‘Brick Church’ as their meeting place. Then in 1956 a building committee was established. Rev Charles E Subock Jr oversaw this important project. On April 8 1959 a congregational meeting approved plans for an addition. The financial program was also approved. This addition brought us the Fellowship Hall. It also added four Sunday School rooms. The expansion was completed in the summer of 1960. The stained-glass windows from the original building were carefully relocated to the new Fellowship Hall. In 1968 the Methodist Church merged again. This time it joined with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. This resulted in the United Methodist Church we know today. The UMC Savage Faith & Ministry Center is more than just a building.
