A humble beginning. That’s what the Ukrainisch-Orthodoxe Kapelle in Cologne represents. Founded in 1960 it initially served a small community. Mostly Ukrainian guest workers lived in the Haus Andreas a senior citizens’ home. They needed a place of worship a space for their faith. So a chapel was created within Haus Andreas. This small chapel was the heart of their community for many years.
The Ukrainisch-Orthodoxe Kapelle wasn’t just any building. It was a haven a sanctuary. It offered solace and spiritual guidance to those far from their homeland. Imagine the hushed reverence the quiet prayers offered within those walls. The community’s devotion was strong. Their faith unwavering.
Today the approximately 50-member strong congregation worships in a new location. Yet the spirit of the original chapel endures. The iconostasis a crucial element of Orthodox churches was carefully moved to their new worship space. This beautiful iconostasis serves as a tangible link to the past. It’s a constant reminder of the community’s enduring faith and resilience. It is a testament to their history their struggles their perseverance.
