Question: What if I told you this very spot was once home to something else entirely? Before it was known as the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Saint Volodymyr, this sacred ground held a different name.

This is the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Saint Volodymyr. It stands as a testament to faith and community. It is a vibrant hub for Ukrainian Catholics in Toronto. But its story starts long before its current name.

Once, this location was known as Saint Luke’s Roman Catholic Church. The transition from Saint Luke’s to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Saint Volodymyr signifies a shift in community. It reflects the evolving demographics of Toronto. The Ukrainian community grew. They sought a place to worship in their own tradition. This church became that place.

The Ukrainian Catholic Church plays a vital role. It supports the spiritual needs of its parishioners. It also serves as a cultural anchor. The church fosters a strong sense of identity among Ukrainian Canadians. It provides a space for celebrating traditions. They pass their heritage to future generations.

The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Toronto and Eastern Canada has a rich history. Blessed Bishop Nykyta Budka played a significant role. He opened and blessed churches and missions in this region. He celebrated his first Hierarchical Divine Liturgy in Montreal in 1912.

Bishop Nykyta recruited twenty Ukrainian Catholic priests. They did pastoral work in Canada between 1914 and 1916. He blessed the erection of St George’s Ukrainian Catholic parish in Oshawa. He also blessed Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church in Thunder Bay.

In 1926 Bishop Nykyta blessed the sanctuary of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Transfiguration in Kitchener. He blessed the site for Sts Volodymyr and Olha Church in Windsor.

In 1928 Bishop Nykyta resigned. He returned to Ukraine. Soviet authorities arrested him in 1945. He died in a Soviet gulag in 1949. Pope John Paul II beatified Nykyta Budka in 2001.

The Ukrainian Catholic Church of Saint Volodymyr is more than bricks and mortar. It is a living embodiment of faith. It represents community resilience. It is a story etched in the heart of Toronto. It echoes the journey of Ukrainian immigrants.
