“It’s a killer because none of us is getting any younger” These words from Alan Jacobson secretary of the U.S. Central Command Memorial Foundation perfectly capture the long and arduous journey to build this memorial. We stand before the U.S. Central Command Memorial a testament to the sacrifices of up to 6500 CentCom troops. They died serving their country since CentCom’s creation in 1983. This memorial located outside CentCom’s headquarters at MacDill Air Force Base is more than just a monument. It’s a poignant reminder of the human cost of war.

The idea for the U.S. Central Command Memorial was conceived even before the 2001 terrorist attacks. Groundbreaking finally happened in 2003. However red tape security concerns and unforeseen setbacks caused significant delays. The original architect passed away. Some construction workers retired. Statues meant for the memorial remain in Colorado. The process was so frustrating that paperwork was lost sent again and the entire project was plagued by bureaucratic hurdles.

The memorial itself is a circular plaza roughly 120 feet in diameter. Walls of varying heights surround it. Flagpoles stand tall on one side. Benches are scattered throughout. Even now though it is partially complete. The names of the fallen are not yet engraved. More benches are planned. A life-size statue of two soldiers finished years ago still awaits transport. The foundation needs to raise an additional $300000 to complete the project bringing the total cost to $1.5 million.

Access to the memorial has been restricted. This is due to the high security measures at MacDill Air Force Base. Even taking pictures during construction was a risky endeavor. Obtaining the necessary military approvals also took over two years. CentCom itself isn’t involved in the construction or planning but they appreciate the foundation’s efforts. The U.S. Central Command Memorial though partially functional already hosts occasional ceremonies. It stands as a tribute to those who served in CentCom’s area of responsibility. This encompasses 20 countries in the Middle East including those involved in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The U.S. Central Command Memorial is a symbol of perseverance. It is a testament to the unwavering dedication of those involved in the project. It will serve as a lasting tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. This memorial though delayed is far from forgotten. It is a story of resilience and a powerful reminder of the service and sacrifice of countless individuals.
