We stand before a testament to resilience, a temporary chapel brimming with more history than many permanent structures. Tymczasowa kaplica parafialna pw. św. Łukasza Ewangelisty serves the parish of St. Luke the Evangelist here in the Górce neighborhood of Bemowo, Warsaw. The original wooden church, relocated from Jedlińsk near Radom in 1991, was a unique presence among Warsaw’s churches. Tragically, in 2004, just a day after receiving relics of St. Padre Pio, the church was consumed by flames. A chalice, a small cross, and miraculously, the Padre Pio relics survived. The relics, though slightly scorched, emerged from a melted safe, a story whispered among parishioners as a miracle. The fire’s aftermath left only the wooden bell tower facing Górczewska Street. The construction of a new brick church began beside the existing parish buildings. While the new church is under construction, Tymczasowa kaplica parafialna pw. św. Łukasza Ewangelisty, housed within the parish house courtyard, has been the heart of the community since 2004. Imagine the Christmas Eve mass of 2004, celebrated by Primate Józef Cardinal Glemp in the newly erected temporary chapel. A symbol of hope amidst the ashes, a temporary space holding a community’s unwavering faith. Even a dispute over the church bells in 2009, with neighbors complaining about the noise, couldn’t shake the spirit of this resilient parish. Tymczasowa kaplica parafialna pw. św. Łukasza Ewangelisty is more than just a temporary structure. It is a symbol of rebirth, a beacon of faith, and a testament to the enduring strength of the St. Luke the Evangelist parish.
