Can you imagine a place where a former mental asylum, a bustling activity park, and a serene park all come together? You’re looking at it right now: Tuvanparken.
Tuvanparken is situated in the Lilla Alby district of Sundbyberg, a short distance from Stockholm’s city center. This park has a complex history, starting in 1892 when it was built as a mental asylum. During its operation, it was referred to as “Tuvans hem f\u00f6r nervsjuka” or, later, “Solna sjukhem”. The asylum was tragic in its later years with a fire in 1940 killing three patients, and the hospital was eventually demolished in 1960.
Today, however, Tuvanparken has transformed into a lively community hub. Kids can swing and slide on the playground, or get active in the obstacle course. The park features a skate park, a dog park, and a vibrant flower park. Sundbyberg residents can be found enjoying picnics on the grassy areas. The park is known for its grand, mature trees, and you can walk past expansive green areas that invite you to rest under the shade of the leaves.
This community hub, full of laughter and activity, is a beautiful example of how a place can be revitalized and repurposed. Today, the park is designed for enjoyment by all ages, but there is still a shadow of its past if you know where to look.
