Beneath the rolling hills of the Weinviertel lies the Tunnel Tradenberg. This marvel of engineering, a key part of Vienna’s Outer Ring Schnellstrasse (S1), stretches for 2.4 kilometers. The Tunnel Tradenberg isn’t just a passage through the hills. It represents a triumph over challenging geology. The Weinviertel, known for its vineyards, had never seen a tunnel built using mining methods before. This made the Tunnel Tradenberg a pioneering project. Imagine the scale of this undertaking. The consortium Bonaventura, responsible for its construction, faced the task of excavating through the northern foothills of the Bisamberg massif. The daily progress, averaging just 2.6 meters, highlights the difficulty of the terrain. The relatively shallow overburden, a mere 50 meters at its maximum, added another layer of complexity. Yet, despite these challenges, the Tunnel Tradenberg took shape. A staggering 1.6 million cubic meters of concrete and 87,000 tons of reinforced steel were used. The project, initiated in April 2007, came to fruition with its opening on January 31, 2010. The Tunnel Tradenberg comprises two tubes, each with two lanes and a continuous hard shoulder. Interestingly, the tubes extend beyond the Tradenberg itself. This open-air extension, designed for noise reduction, brings the total length of the north tube to 2423.5 meters and the south tube to 2457 meters. Inside the mountain, the mined sections of the tubes measure 1403.6 meters and 1359.0 meters respectively. The construction incorporates advanced engineering features. Sprayed concrete, tunnel lattice girders, and system anchors provide structural support. Nine cross-passages connect the two tubes. These are spaced approximately every 250 meters, with five within the mined section and four in the open-air sections. Powerful jet fans ensure proper ventilation. As you travel through the Tunnel Tradenberg, remember the feat of engineering that it represents. This tunnel, a crucial artery for Vienna’s traffic, is a testament to human ingenuity. The speed limit, 100 km/h, allows you to appreciate this modern marvel while ensuring a safe journey.
