Gazing up at the hills of Pat Sin Leng, we find ourselves at the Tung Tsz Catchwater, a vital part of the Plover Cove Reservoir system. Tung Tsz Catchwater isn’t just a canal. It’s a lifeline, extending nearly 19 kilometers to capture the streams and rainwater that feed the reservoir. This network expands the reservoir’s catchment area significantly, adding 4,532 hectares, equivalent to a substantial 40% of Lantau Island. The Tung Tsz Catchwater itself contributes significantly to this impressive network. The construction of the Shek Pik Reservoir in the early 1960s was a monumental task, driven by the pressing need to alleviate Hong Kong’s chronic water shortages. Initially, the reservoir relied on a network of 17.5 kilometers of catchwaters. This system includes pipelines and a series of tunnels channeling water from the north side of Lantau Island to the reservoir in the south. However, even with the completion of Shek Pik, the demand for water remained high. The government realized the potential to further enhance the water supply by tapping into the streams around Tung Chung. This led to the construction of a new tunnel, a remarkable feat of engineering, measuring 5.1 meters in diameter and stretching an impressive 7.2 kilometers. This tunnel, completed in 1966, intercepts three streams, further boosting the reservoir’s capacity and contributing to the overall water security of Hong Kong. The Tung Tsz Catchwater stands as a testament to the ingenuity and foresight of the engineers who designed this complex water management system. It is a vital component in ensuring a reliable water supply for Hong Kong, a city constantly grappling with the challenges of a growing population and limited natural resources. So, the next time you enjoy a glass of water in Hong Kong, remember the Tung Tsz Catchwater and the intricate network it’s a part of, silently working to quench the city’s thirst.
