Overlooking the Yuen Long landscape, Tung Tau Tsuen whispers tales of centuries past. Tung Tau Tsuen isn’t just one place. It refers to several spots in Hong Kong, including a village near Yuen Long Station. Our focus is on this historic village, nestled in the Yuen Long Kau Hui area. Established in the 17th century, Tung Tau Tsuen’s name means “East Head Village”. It’s a nod to its location east of the old Yuen Long Kau Hui market. Originally, the village bore the name Chan Lok Li Tsuen, reflecting the prominent Chan clan and the Lok and Li families who founded it. These families hailed from Dongguan, bringing their traditions and heritage to this new settlement. Tung Tau Tsuen holds a unique place in history as part of the Tung Tau alliance, also known as the “Joint Meeting Group of Seven Villages”. This alliance included Nam Pin Wai, Choi Uk Tsuen, Ying Lung Wai, Shan Pui Tsuen, Wong Uk Tsuen, and Tai Wai Tsuen. The Yi Shing Temple in Wong Uk Tsuen stands as a testament to this alliance, serving as a shared place of worship. Even the Ss. Peter and Paul Church, now situated on Castle Peak Road, has roots in Tung Tau Tsuen. Originally built within the village in 1925, it was relocated and rebuilt in its current location in 1958. The story of Tung Tau Tsuen is one of community, resilience, and the passage of time. It’s a reminder of the deep-seated traditions and the enduring spirit of the New Territories.
