Have you ever wondered about the history of this expansive flatland that stretches before you? This is the Tullnerfeld, a fertile alluvial plain that has played a key role in the development of Vienna and Lower Austria. Imagine, thousands of years ago, when the Danube River carved its way through this landscape, depositing sediment and creating the fertile soil that would sustain generations to come. It was once a vast wetland, with the Danube flowing through it in a meandering path.

The Tullnerfeld was inhabited long before the Romans arrived. From the Neolithic era, people have thrived in this area, drawn by the abundance of resources. But the Romans saw its strategic location and built a fort called Comagena. It guarded the northern border of the Roman Empire, controlling the important ford across the Danube and securing the fertile Tullnerfeld Basin.

During the Middle Ages, the Tullnerfeld flourished as a trade center. The powerful Babenberg dynasty established its residence in Tulln, strategically located within the Tullnerfeld. The Tullnerfeld even played a role in the famous German epic the Song of the Nibelung, where it is said that Attila the Hun met his future wife Kriemhild in Tulln.

Today, the Tullnerfeld is a rich agricultural region, known for its production of wheat, maize, potatoes and sugar beets. But it’s not just about farming. It is also a popular recreation area, with many hiking and biking trails winding through its meadows and forests. You can even see the Danube River still carving its way through this landscape, a reminder of its ancient power.
